U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth is “close” to cutting business ties with Anthropic and designating the AI company a “supply chain risk” - meaning anyone who wants to do business with the U.S. military has to cut ties with the company, a penalty usually reserved for foreign adversaries, a senior Pentagon official told Axios.
The senior official said, “It will be an enormous pain in the ass to disentangle, and we are going to make sure they pay a price for forcing our hand like this.”
Anthropic’s large language model Claude is the only AI model currently available in the military's classified systems, and is the world leader for many business applications, with negotiations over the terms under which the military can use Claude having been ongoing for months, as Anthropic wishes to ensure its tools aren't used to spy on Americans en masse, or to develop weapons that fire with no human involvement, terms which are considered “unacceptable” to the Pentagon under Hegseth.

The U.S. military is continuing a significant buildup of air and naval assets in the Middle East ahead of planned talks with Iran in Geneva on Tuesday, to both intimidate Tehran and to have options to strike inside the country should negotiations over its nuclear program fail, multiple sources familiar with the matter told CNN.
Assets with the U.S. Air Force based in the United Kingdom, including aerial-refueling tankers and fighter jets, are being repositioned closer to the Middle East, according to sources familiar with the movements, while the flow of air-defense systems continues into the region, in order to defend air bases in range of Iran. Additionally, several military units deployed in the region that were expected to rotate out in the coming weeks have had their orders extended, one source familiar with the matter told CNN.
