According to a classified intelligence report earlier this year from the Pentagon’s Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) seen by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), China is rapidly building a massive fleet of commercial ferries in preparation for an Invasion of Taiwan. The DIA says that the large ocean-going vessels have been modified to carry tanks and partake in amphibious operations by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), with China expected to have more than 70 of the large vessels in service by the end of 2026.

Satellite intelligence of the ferries from earlier this year shows them being used alongside a series of new landing-docks off China's southern coastline, as well as deploying amphibious forces in military exercises by the PLA and PLAN. The intelligence report from the U.S. Department of Defense assessed the commercial ferries as possible military targets in a conflict scenario with China, meaning that the ferries could be targeted and sunk by U.S. and Allied Forces in the event of a Taiwan Conflict, even if they are manned and operated by civilian crews for the Chinese Navy.
