Christmas Novena
December 16th

O Shepherd that rulest Israel, Thou that leadest Joseph like a sheep, come to guide and comfort us.

Our Father. Hail Mary. Glory be.

Hail and blessed be the hour and the moment in which the Son of God was born of the most pure Virgin Mary, at midnight, in Bethlehem, in piercing cold. In that hour, vouchsafe, O my God, to hear my prayer and obtain my desires through the merits of Our Saviour Jesus Christ and of His Blessed Mother. Amen. (15 times)

HYMN - Rorate cǽli desuper

Roráte caéli désuper, et núbes plúant jústum. Repeat: Roráte.

Drop down dew, ye heavens, from above, and let the clouds rain down the Just One.

℟. Roráte.

Be not angry, O Lord, and remember no longer our iniquity: behold the city of the Holy One is become a desert: Sion is become a desert: Jerusalem is desolate: the house of thy sanctification and of thy glory, where our fathers praised thee.

2  Peccávimus, et facti sumus tamquam immúndus nos, et cecídimus quasi fólium univérsi: et iniquitátes nostræ quasi ventus abstulérunt nos: abscondísti fáciem tuam a nobis, et allisisti nos in manu iniquitátis nostræ. ℟. Roráte.

We have sinned and are become as one that is unclean: and we have all fallen as a leaf, and our iniquities like the wind have carried us away: thou hast hidden thy face from us, and hast crushed us in the hold of our iniquity.

3  Vide Domine afflictiónem pópuli tui, et mitte quem missúrus es: emítte Agnum dominatórem terræ, de Petra desérti ad montem fíliæ Sion: ut áuferat ipse jugum captivitátis nostræ. ℟. Roráte.

Behold, O Lord, the affliction of thy people, and send forth Him who is to come: send forth the Lamb, the ruler of the earth, from the Rock of the desert to the mount of daughter Sion: that He may take away the yoke of our captivity.

4  Consolámini, consolámini, pópule meus: cito véniet salus tua: quare mæróre consúmeris, quia innovávit te dolor? Salvábo te, noli timére, ego enim sum Dóminus Deus tuus, Sanctus Israel, Redémptor tuus. ℟. Roráte.

Be comforted, be comforted, my people: thy salvation cometh quickly: why art thou consumed with grief: for sorrow hath estranged thee: I will save thee: fear not, for I am the Lord thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Redeemer.

~~~~~~
AUREM tuam, quæsumus, Dómine, précibus nostris accómmoda: et mentis nostræ ténebras, grátia tuæ visitatiónis illústra.
Qui vivis et regnas, cum Deo Patre in unitate Spíritus Sancti, Deus, per ómnia sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
HYMN - True Son of God, Eternal Light
Advent
True Son of God, Eternal Light,
Come down to earth, illume the night!
Cancel the curse of Paradise,
Haste Thou to pay Redemption’s price!
Four thousand years was hope delayed,
While devils mocked, and prophets prayed;
Four thousand years a cheerless gloom
Held all the earth in sin and doom.
O Long-Desired of Nations, haste!
Lo, demons lay Thy Kingdom waste:
See hands outstretched for help in vain,
Hear cries of woe, despair, and pain!
O Lord of Hosts, we pray Thee, come!
Put down the pow'rs of heathendom;
Rise up in all Thy matchless might,
Drive back the troops of hell in flight!
God's Kingdom come, His will be done!
May all men serve the Triune One;
Sing hymns of thanks, thou sainted host,
To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost!
