An 1829 article in Niles’ Weekly Register reported that the Rothschild family was attempting to purchase Jerusalem or parts of Palestine from the financially struggling Ottoman Empire. The piece suggested that wealthy jewish financiers could help restore jewish settlement and influence in the region, with some contemporaries even imagining the reestablishment of a jewish homeland centered around Jerusalem.
