In two episodes in May and July of 1844, pitched battles occurred between two groups: Protestant “nativists” associated with the Know Nothing party (people, including clergy, who feared foreigners, especially Catholics and their “popery”) and Catholic newcomers, most of them Irish immigrants. As many as 58 people were killed—Protestants, Catholics, and members of the militia that was belatedly sent out to quell the riot. The riots were a result of rising anti-Catholic sentiment at the growing population of Irish Catholic immigrants.

These were part of a series of riots that later came to be known as the Know Nothing Riots. These anti-immigrant and anti-Catholic protests culminated into riots in Philadelphia in 1844; St. Louis in 1854, Cincinnati and Louisville in 1855; Baltimore in 1856; Washington, D.C., and New York City in 1857; and New Orleans in 1858.

Testosterone does not directly cause aggression in men; the relationship is complex and often exaggerated. Instead, testosterone is more strongly linked to social dominance, which can involve both aggressive and non-aggressive behaviors depending on the situation. Dopamine is associated with reward and motivation. 

Hyperdopaminergic activity

The relationship between the dopaminergic brain and aggression is complex, with both increases and decreases in dopamine signaling linked to aggressive behavior.

Increases aggression: Overactivity in certain brain regions, like the ventral tegmental area (VTA), can be linked to aggression.
Amplifies reward: Increased dopamine can heighten the sense of reward associated with aggressive actions, which can make aggression more likely to occur again.
Enhances threat response: It may also increase an individual's responsiveness to perceived threats, potentially leading to a more aggressive reaction.
