On October 31, 1919, the German volunteer unit (Freikorps), led by Colonel Gerhard Roßbach, crossed the Latvia-Lithuania border to support the Russian White Army in their fight against the Bolsheviks during the Russian Civil War. The unit, known as the "Iron Division," played a crucial role in several battles, including the defense of Pskov and Narva. Despite being outnumbered and defunded by the German government, the German volunteers fought the Red Army with remarkable courage and determination. The song "Die Grenzwacht Hielt Im Osten" is based on a poem dedicated to a German Freikorps soldier who lost his life in action at Riga, Latvia. Many Baltic Germans who participated in campaigns against the Bolsheviks became the strongest early supporters of the National Socialists. Gerhard Roßbach took part in the attempted overthrow of the German government, the Munich Putsch of 1923.
