πŸ‡πŸ‡ΉπŸ‡°πŸ‡ͺ Haiti welcomes Kenya-led multinational force offer

Haiti has welcomed ''with great interest'' Kenya's offer to lead a multinational force to restore order.

Haiti Foreign Minister Jean Victor Geneus said he appreciated the expression of African solidarity. The Caribbean nation is suffering from a surge in gang violence and is in a deep security, political and humanitarian crisis.

Earlier Kenyan Foreign Minister Alfred Mutua said a quick fix to Haiti's problems would not be possible, but the mission would aim to stabilise the situation and train a proper Haitian police force.

Mutua said the people of Haiti had suffered enough, and Kenya felt a responsibility to help its brothers and sisters in the African diaspora.

πŸ‡πŸ‡ΉπŸ‡°πŸ‡ͺ Kenya ready to lead multinational force to Haiti

Kenya is ready to lead a multinational force into Haiti, which is experiencing a surge in violence between police and gangs, its foreign minister said on Saturday.

Earlier this month, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appealed to the Security Council and major potential contribution countries to act fast to create the conditions for the deployment of multinational force to Haiti.

πŸ—£"At the request of Friends of Haiti Group of Nations, Kenya has accepted to positively consider leading a Multi-National Force to Haiti," Foreign Minister Alfred Mutua said in a statement.

"Kenya's commitment is to deploy a contingent of 1,000 police officers to help train and assist Haitian police restore normalcy in the country and protect strategic installations," Mutua said.

The planned deployment from Kenya, though, is still subject to getting a U.N. Security Council mandate and Kenyan authorisations.

πŸ‡°πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡πŸ‡Ή Kenyan officials meet with Haiti police to discuss gangfighting force

A Kenyan delegation met with leaders of Haiti's national police on Monday, a day after arriving in the country as it assesses leading a possible United Nations-backed multinational security force to help police fight escalating gang warfare.

The 10-person Kenyan delegation met senior police staff early on Monday and will stay until Wednesday, holding further meetings with national police and Haiti's Prime Minister, Ariel Henry.

Henry's government first requested international security assistance last October, but despite repeated calls from the United Nations, the call went unanswered until Kenya said it was prepared to lead such a force last month.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦πŸ‡°πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦ Zelensky held talks with Kenyan and South African presidents about plans about "grain hub" for East Africa and "revival of grain deal" to "help tackle food insecurity"

Ukraine has said it will set up "grain hubs" in Kenya and other parts of Africa to "tackle food insecurity."

President Volodymyr Zelensky's office announced the plan, without giving details, after he met his Kenyan and South African counterparts, William Ruto and Cyril Ramaphosa respectively, in New York.

Ruto said that the Ukrainian president had committed to establishing a "grain hub" in Kenya's coastal city of Mombasa to help address food shortages in East Africa.

Ramaphosa said that he and the Ukrainian president had discussed "the way forward on the peace initiative". They also talked about the "revival of the grain deal."

πŸ‡°πŸ‡ͺ Kenya to scrap visas for all visitors, president says

Visitors to Kenya from across the world will no longer require a visa from January, President William Ruto said.

Ruto said his government had developed a digital platform to ensure all visitors would receive an electronic travel authorisation in advance, instead of needing to apply for a visa.

"It shall no longer be necessary for any person from any corner of the globe to carry the burden of applying for a visa to come to Kenya," he said.

Ruto has long advocated for visa-free travel within the African continent.

At a conference in the Republic of Congo in October he said people from African countries would not require a visa to visit Kenya by the end of 2023.

πŸ‡°πŸ‡ͺ Kenyan cult leader charged with murder of 191 children

Kenyan cult leader Paul Mackenzie and 29 associates were charged on Tuesday with the murder of 191 children whose bodies were found among more than double that number buried in a forest.

The defendants all denied the charges brought before a court in the coastal town of Malindi. One suspect was found mentally unfit to stand trial.

Prosecutors say Mackenzie ordered his followers to starve themselves and their children to death so that they could go to heaven before the world ended. More than 400 bodies were exhumed from the Shakahola forest.

πŸ‡°πŸ‡ͺ On the mass unrest in Kenya

Since June 20th, there have been daily protests in Kenya with thousands of people participating.

The reason for the protests was the government's proposal to introduce additional fees on basic goods such as bread, vegetable oil and sugar in order to overcome the budget deficit. These measures caused understandable unrest across the country, as the population is already struggling to make ends meet, and additional taxes will only exacerbate the situation.

β–ͺ️On June 20th, protests in the Kenyan capital Nairobi and other major cities gathered thousands of people, against whom the police used tear gas and, as reported, live ammunition. During the suppression of the rallies, 1 protester was killed and another 200 were injured.

Soon after, the parliament decided to revise the budget amendments on June 25th. For this same day, the opposition planned large-scale protests, which are now unfolding and have already resulted in the storming of government buildings.

β–ͺ️Meanwhile, government spokesman Isaac Mwaura suspected foreign powers of sponsoring the protests. In the same speech, he mentioned that the current president Ruto could have made statements that displeased other people.

In particular, he reminded of the Kenyan leader's participation in the Ukrainian peace summit in Switzerland. Thus, he indirectly accused the Russian leadership of instigating the protests.

β–ͺ️Also, some Western observers note the appearance of the Russian flag at the protests, which does not indicate the presence of instigators from Russia. Recently, the tricolor has become a symbol of protest against the West on the African continent, and in the logic of rallies directed against the government, its appearance is quite appropriate.

πŸ”»The reaction of the Kenyan officials shows how the Western press has influenced the local government. Now all the problems within the country can be conveniently attributed to the cursed Russians, instead of seeing the beam in their own eye. And it's understandable: just the other day, Kenya became the main non-NATO ally of the USA, and the new status obliges a certain politeness on a whole range of foreign policy issues.

πŸ‡°πŸ‡ͺ Waning of Protests in Kenya

After the events of June 25th, when protesters dissatisfied with the new tax bill seized the parliament and clashed with police, the protests have been subsiding.

This is understandable - the main demand of the protesters to cancel the bill was met, and the parliament went on vacation until July 23rd.

πŸ“ŒThe promised "million-strong" march against President Ruto's presidency on June 27th did not take place.

This was largely because the government gathered law enforcement officers from across the country to constantly patrol the capital. Moreover, one of the influential protest leaders backed down and proposed only holding events in memory of the deceased.

β–ͺ️The few rioters who dared to take to the streets met fierce resistance from the police, who used tear gas and did not hesitate to use live ammunition again.

β–ͺ️In addition to the capital, protests also took place in many major cities, where, due to the concentration of security forces in Nairobi, there were acts of looting: burning police cars, robbing supermarkets, and robberies.

πŸ”»Apparently, the demonstrations, without foreign support, have temporarily lost their meaning for Kenyans. However, the protest potential they have shown can be further used by various parties to pursue their interests if they are dissatisfied with the rule of William Ruto.

πŸ‡°πŸ‡ͺKenya: President Ruto proposes budget cuts after deadly protests

Kenyan President William Ruto has announced a 177 billion budget cut to seal the budget hole left after the withdrawal of the finance bill. This comes after protests led to the cancellation of contentious tax hikes, which resulted in the deaths of 39 people.

The country erupted into chaos when peaceful demonstrations against high tax rises turned violent. Police fired at crowds that stormed parliament.

Mostly led by young Kenyans, the protests reflected widespread anger over an annual finance bill. Ruto had to scrap the bill, warning of a huge funding gap.

"We will be proposing to the National Assembly a budget cut of not the entire 346, but a budget cut of 177 billion and borrowing the difference (around 169 billion shillings)," said Ruto.
