π²π² Myanmar cedes upcoming ASEAN chair to Philippines
Myanmar has ceded its turn to chair the Southeast Asian regional bloc, an official confirmed on Tuesday, after the group agreed that an existing but widely criticized peace plan will continue to guide its response to the bloody conflict there.
Myanmar, which has been gripped by violence and political and economic chaos since the coup, was slated to chair the 10-member regional grouping in 2026. But regional leaders agreed that the Philippines would assume the role in 2026 instead.
"The Philippines will take over the ASEAN chairmanship for 2026," ASEAN secretary general Kao Kim Hourn said after the first day of the group's annual summit in Jakarta.

π²π² What's happening in Myanmar?
Situation as of December 17, 2023
In Myanmar, the intensity of fighting has slightly decreased due to an agreement on a temporary ceasefire. However, fights are still ongoing in some areas. Clashes have been observed in five states of the country over the past two days.
π»In Shan State, militants from the Taang National Liberation Army successfully raided the Namkama area. They captured three military personnel and seized small arms and ammunition.
However, government troops in the state bordering China have taken the initiative. They are launching mass attacks on militant positions in Namsang, Muse, Kutkan, and β105 Mile,β using both artillery and Mi-35P helicopters.
π»Intense clashes are ongoing on the border of the Sikaing and Mandalay states. Members of ethnic groups are attacking Myanmar military positions near Chang U, Naipukone, and Madai. According to the latest data, seven servicemen have already died.
π»In southern and southwestern Myanmar, militant groups unsuccessfully attempted to occupy several government installations in Rakhine and Pegu states. They attacked government troops in Mraw U and Pyu. In Maungdaw, the Myanmar Armed Forces targeted a cluster of Arakanese.
Attempts (primarily from the PRC) to calm the warring factions have not yet produced the desired results. Clashes are still ongoing, although with less intensity. However, even this increases the chances of partially extinguishing the conflict and getting closer to resolving disagreements.
