Now deputy prime minister Bob Loughman, as opposition leader in May, had cited the agreement as undermining Vanuatu's sovereignty and a major reason for removing Kalsakau from power. Vanuatu had further upset Australia by requesting Chinese police support during the recent political crisis.

Australia also faces a review of the security agreement with Papua New Guinea, with PNG PM James Marape concerned the agreement impinged on PNG's sovereignty.

Likewise, Australia's security relations with the Solomon Islands remain strained over the Solomon's agreements with Beijing, including Chinese police assisting with upcoming Pacific Games preparations.
