Letter from Ivan Kosolov to his girlfriend
Dear Varya:

"No, we will not meet again. Yesterday at noon we attacked another Hitler column.
A Nazi grenade hit the side shell of the tank and exploded inside.

While he was driving the vehicle into the forest, Vasili passed away. I am seriously injured.

I have buried Vasili Orlov in a birch grove. Vasili died without being able to say a single word to me, he said nothing to his beautiful Zoia or his Maria, who has hair so blond that it looks like the fuzz of a dandelion in autumn.

Thus, of the three tankers, only one has remained. I got to the forest when it was starting to get dark.
What I went through at night was torture, I lost a lot of blood.

Now, I don't know why, the pain that was burning my chest has subsided and I feel peace in my soul.

It is a pity that we have not achieved our goal. But we did everything we could.

Our comrades will pursue the enemy, who must not step on our fields or our forests.

He could never have lived like this without you, Varya. You have always helped me, in Kalkhin Gol and here.
I believe that when you love, you treat people with more kindness. Thanks my love!

People grow old, but the sky is always young, like your eyes, which it is impossible to stop admiring.

They will never get old, nor will they stop shining.

Time will pass, wounds will heal, new cities will be built, new gardens will be planted. Other lives will come, other songs will sing.

But never forget the song of the three tankers. You will have precious children, you will love again.

But I'm leaving, I leave you feeling great love for you. "
Your Ivan Kolosov.

The tank crew died in October 1941 while trying to escape the German encirclement near Viazma, in the Smolensk region of western Russia.

Second Lieutenant Ivan Kolosov wrote his letter to Varya knowing that he would never see his beloved again.

The tank was found 25 years after the incident. When they opened the vehicle, they found inside the remains of the driver, a map, a photo of his beloved and unsent letters.
