🇲🇦🇪🇸 The current Spanish minister of the interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska Gómez, spent 32 million EURs in 2019 to "upgrade" the border fences surrounding the exclaves of Ceuta and Melilla by removing the barbed wire atop the border wall.

The "upgrades" consisted of making the border fence taller in some areas, placing a couple dozen new CCTV cameras with facial recognition systems and buying new vehicles for the local Civil Guard.

Spain (and the EU's) border protection in Ceuta and Melilla also strongly relies on Morocco's border guards on preventing migrants from assaulting the border fence which Morocco repeatedly fails to do despite hundreds of millions of EURs thrown their way by Brussels and Madrid to do exactly that.

🇲🇦🇪🇸 As the night fell, thousands of Moroccans keep crossing into Ceuta and run aimlessly on the city's streets.

The Spanish Gendarmerie (Guardia Civil) estimated earlier today that as many as 40k migrants jumped the fence from Morocco into Spain, an estimate that is very likely outdated as of the writing of this post.

🇲🇦🇪🇸 The streets of Ceuta are filled with young Moroccan men amid a growing Spanish military presence

Morocco is the 5th biggest African economy in terms of nominal GDP and 6th in terms of GDP at Purchasing Power Parity (PPP). A Bloomberg article from June 2026 said Morocco overtook South Africa as the continent's most industrialized economy.

Morocco is quickly maturing into a Western style economy as the country is beginning to see acute labour shortages. As of April 2026, roughly 50k legal migrants from West Africa work in Morocco's agriculture sector despite having an unemployment rate of 12-13%.

The manufacturing sector is struggling as well to find labourers and is bringing in migrants from countries like Togo, Benin, Senegal, Guinea etc. Factory owners in the country note that young Moroccans are picky when it comes to job offers and many refuse to work in agriculture or manufacturing, preferring to stay unemployed or migrate to Europe.
