Statistical Consequences of Fat Tails: Real World Preasymptotics, Epistemology, and Applications

Nassim Nicholas Taleb
https://www.researchers.one/article/2020-01-21.

The book investigates the misapplication of conventional statistical techniques to fat tailed distributions and looks for remedies, when possible.
Switching from thin tailed to fat tailed distributions requires more than "changing the color of the dress". Traditional asymptotics deal mainly with either n=1 or n=∞, and the real world is in between, under of the "laws of the medium numbers" --which vary widely across specific distributions. Both the law of large numbers and the generalized central limit mechanisms operate in highly idiosyncratic ways outside the standard Gaussian or Levy-Stable basins of convergence.

Workshop on Critical Transitions in Complex Systems 2020 (online)
29th - 31st July 2020

Complex systems research has been at the forefront of scientific priorities for some time and many very interesting phenomena have been identified and explored in the context of a wide variety of applications. This workshop is part of a series, reflecting on an emerging movement to develop a mathematical theory for sudden changes in the dynamical behaviour of complex systems, so-called critical transitions. The prospect to develop reliable early-warning signals for such critical transitions is potentially far-reaching since these could lead to better control strategies to avoid or diminish the effect of catastrophes.

🔗 The workshop will be conducted via zoom. The registration is free but compulsory via the zoom link here.

Lots of useful stuff in Google's smart snippets etc but the shift is worthy of attention.

Managing the COVID-19 Pandemic across Geography and Demography

Niayesh Afshordi
Wednesday, July 29, 2020 - 14:00 to 15:30 EDT

What factors drive the growth and decay of a pandemic? Can a study of community differences (in demographics, settlement, mobility, weather, and epidemic history) allow these factors to be identified? Has “herd immunity” to COVID-19 been reached anywhere? What are the best steps to manage/avoid future outbreaks in each community? We analyzed the entire set of local COVID-19 epidemics in the United States; a broad selection of demographic, population density, climate factors, and local mobility data, in order to address these questions. What we found will surprise you!
