Delcy Rodríguez was chosen as Venezuela’s acting president because she was seen as the safest, most workable successor to Nicolás Maduro.

Oil executives, investors and US officials viewed the longtime oil minister as uniquely positioned to keep the country functioning under sanctions and manage a transition without disrupting Venezuela’s oil industry.

President Donald Trump endorsed her as a continuity choice, betting that her experience and industry ties made her preferable to opposition figures and less likely to trigger chaos in the world’s largest oil-reserve nation.
