Myanmar military unleashes drones to counter rebel advances

Myanmar’s military has been ramping up its use of drones, deploying a combination of retrofitted commercial drones and customized military munitions to carry out a torrent of deadly strikes against rebel forces and civilians, according to visual evidence of recent attacks and interviews with people inside the country.

The junta has also sought out specialized surveillance drones, in particular from Russia, according to supply chain analysts.

Russia’s defense ministry has publicly confirmed that Myanmar has at least one type of Russian surveillance drone, the Orlan 10E, in its arsenal.

Another Russian drone developer, Albatross has also been working with the Myanmar military.

The Myanmar military has since 2021 received training from Albatross and procured Albatross-M5 systems, which are long-range surveillance drones.

Decisive enabler: India has now become the second largest supplier of critical technologies to the Russian Federation, Bloomberg reports.

Indian exports of restricted items, including microchips, circuits, and machine tools, have dramatically increased.

In July 2024 alone, these exports reached approximately $95 million.

Nearly 20% of the sensitive technology entering Russia's military-industrial complex now originates from India.

This complicates the sanctions landscape for Western allies, who are struggling to enforce restrictions on dual-use items that can be repurposed for military applications.

Lebanese officials have criticised Western officials involved in diplomatic talks on a ceasefire as ‘incompetent and indecisive’.

Lebanese officials said diplomatic efforts were far from conclusive and that issues were being glossed over in generalisations. The United States has only ‘pledged to endeavour to keep the fighting confined to the front lines and to ensure that civilians on both sides are not affected’.

"Their priority is not the ceasefire and stopping Israeli aggression against Lebanon," the Lebanese official said about the US stance.

Israeli strikes have shook the peacekeepers' main base in southern Lebanon, prompting U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Western countries to condemn the attacks. The UNIFIL force called it a "serious development" and said the security of U.N. personnel and property must be guaranteed.
