The UK’s Digital ID (sometimes nicknamed “BritCard” in media) is a free, government-issued digital identity credential announced by Prime Minister Keir Starmer in September 2025. It is stored securely on your smartphone in the GOV.UK Wallet (part of or integrated with the GOV.UK One Login app). It is not a physical card and is designed for convenient, consent-based identity verification.
How Does It Look?
It appears as a digital credential inside a mobile wallet app — similar to how you store contactless bank cards, tickets, or use the NHS App.
Key elements it includes:
Your photo (for biometric/facial verification, like a passport or eVisa)
Name
Date of birth
Nationality or residency/immigration status
Cryptographically secured attributes (e.g., verified “right to work” or “proof of age”)
Conceptual/mockup designs (widely shared in coverage) show a clean, modern app interface with:
A prominent circular photo at the top
Your name and key details
Green checkmarks or verified badges for attributes like “Right to work: Permanent” or “Proof of age: Over 18”
Buttons to “Share Identity,” “Share my age,” or regenerate credentials
It can display multiple items together (like a driving licence card alongside identity attributes)
In practice: You open the GOV.UK app/wallet, authenticate with biometrics (Face ID, fingerprint, etc.), and share only the specific information needed via secure methods (QR code, NFC, or encrypted link). It emphasizes data minimisation — e.g., proving you’re over 18 without revealing your exact age or full details.
It is not yet fully rolled out with final screenshots (as of the March 2026 government update and ongoing consultation), but it builds on the existing GOV.UK One Login and expanding GOV.UK Wallet (which already supports the digital Veteran Card and is adding a digital driving licence).
Who Will Use It and For What?
UK citizens and legal residents will use it. It is intended to be widely usable across both government and private sectors.
Main uses include:
Right to work checks — Employers must verify this (this was initially planned as mandatory; after backlash it is framed more around convenience, but employers still need to perform checks and the digital ID is positioned as a key tool).
Accessing government services more easily (benefits/welfare, free childcare applications, tax records, driving licence applications, etc.).
Proving identity to landlords when renting.
Opening bank accounts or other financial services.
Age verification (e.g., buying alcohol — laws are being updated to allow phone-based checks).
Gig economy work and other private sector verifications.
Employers, landlords, banks, government departments, and many private services will accept or use it for verification. The goal is to replace cumbersome paper checks (passports + utility bills, etc.) with one secure digital proof that you control.
It is promoted as "voluntary" for everyday use (you won’t be forced to carry or show it like a physical ID card), but it will become the standard or preferred method for many official checks. There are alternatives for people without smartphones or photo ID.
