Israel's Knesset voted 56-43 on Wednesday to advance a controversial Basic Law that would enshrine Torah study as a foundational value of the state and recognize long-term Torah study as service to Israel and the Jewish people. Sponsored by the ultra-Orthodox United Torah Judaism party and backed by Shas, the bill would effectively place full-time yeshiva study on a similar footing to military service, granting those engaged in it rights equivalent to those received by soldiers.
The legislation comes at the center of one of Israel's most divisive political battles: the exemption of ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) men from military service. The issue has intensified since the outbreak of the Gaza genocide and broader regional war, as demands for Haredi conscription have grown while ultra-Orthodox parties have fought to preserve exemptions following a 2024 High Court ruling that deemed them unconstitutional. Although the coalition backed the bill's preliminary passage, government minister Ze'ev Elkin said future support depends on removing language explicitly comparing Torah students to military service members.
The vote also exposed broader political maneuvering inside the Knesset. According to Hebrew media reports, Palestinian citizens of Israel represented by Hadash-Ta'al and Ra'am abstained under an understanding with the ultra-Orthodox parties, which reportedly agreed to block legislation promoted by National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir targeting the use of mosque loudspeakers in exchange for non-opposition to the Torah study bill.
Senior ultra-Orthodox lawmakers celebrated the vote as a historic victory, with United Torah Judaism MK Yisrael Eichler calling it a "declaration of holy war" against those he said persecute Torah scholars, while other party leaders accused opponents of antisemitism and judicial overreach. The bill must still pass committee review and three additional Knesset readings before becoming law, but its advancement marks a major step in the struggle over military service, religion, and the balance of power between Israel's judiciary, secular establishment, and ultra-Orthodox political bloc.

🇺🇸 🇹🇼 🇮🇷 During the Senate Appropriations Committee’s defense subcommittee hearing earlier today, Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao told senators that arms shipments to Taiwan have been paused, saying “Right now we’re doing a pause in order to make sure we have…
Island stages first use of Himars on Taiwan Strait as part of invasion-defense drills
The Taiwanese army on Wednesday used truck-mounted High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, or Himars, to fire 32 test rockets from a site near a river mouth on Taiwan’s western coast, which has been regarded as a potential landing point for invading Chinese forces.
The drill was the highlight of two days of military exercises showcasing Taiwan’s preparations to combat an amphibious invasion. China considers democratically self-ruled Taiwan as part of its territory and hasn’t ruled out potentially using force to absorb the island.
“This is sending a message to the Chinese that they are going to get hit hard if they try to come across the strait—and will end up with far fewer ships than they started with,” said Grant Newsham, a retired U.S. Marine colonel who served in several Indo-Pacific roles.
President Trump has held off on approving the package as he presses his administration to maintain a conciliatory tone toward Beijing.
Trump said in May after meeting Chinese leader Xi Jinping that he considers the package to be “a very good negotiating chip” with China. Xi has made clear to Trump that he opposes U.S. arms sales to Taiwan.
Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te has made it a priority to build up the island’s defenses against China. Beijing refuses to engage with Lai and sees him as a supporter for Taiwan’s independence, a line in the sand for China.
The exercises came after Taiwan’s main opposition leader, Cheng Li-wun, arrived in Washington—following an April meeting with Xi—where she is presenting herself as someone who can better ensure peaceful cross-Taiwan Strait relations.

🇷🇺 🇺🇦 🛢 Russia Bans Jet Fuel Exports After Record Refinery Attacks
In addition to refineries, drones are targeting export terminals and oil pipeline infrastructure, such as pumping stations. Ukraine has also been attacking storage facilities, and if Russia hoped to produce and store more fuel to avoid a repeat of fuel crises seen in recent summers, then that might be more difficult with reduced capacity and storage volumes, Vakulenko said.
In total, there were at least 30 strikes on Russian oil assets in May, the most for any month since Russia’s full-scale invasion, the data compiled by Bloomberg show.
Russia has banned jet fuel exports “to ensure a stable situation in the domestic fuel market,” the government said on Monday.
It last year exported an average of 30,000 barrels a day of the fuel, or less than 2% of global supplies, according to data compiled by Bloomberg from analytics firm Vortexa Ltd. Daily average exports slipped to 28,000 barrels in the first four months of 2026, with Turkey the main buyer, the data show.
So far, only Russia-occupied Crimea has rationed road-fuel purchases. Last summer, fuel shortages affected Russia’s Far East as well as Russian-occupied Ukrainian territories.
However, there are some signs that supplies are tightening.
As of late May, daily volumes of premium gasoline 95 offered for delivery in the European part of Russia fell to around 5,000 tons per day, a third of what was on offer a year ago, according to the St. Petersburg International Mercantile Exchange. At the same time, prices of this type of fuel on the key commodities bourse jumped more than 20% year-on-year.
