BREAKING: More Censorship On The Horizon

On Wednesday the House of Representatives voted 320 to 91 to pass HR 6090, otherwise known as the Antisemitism Awareness Act.

The bill aims to compel the Department of Education to adopt the working definition of anti-semitism as used by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, in an effort to use anti-discrimination laws to crackdown on Pro Palestinian protests occurring at American universities.

In essence adopting the very broad definition used by the IHRA is a disingenuous attempt to conflate criticism of Israel with genuine anti-semitism.

While falling short of outright criminalizing criticism of Israel, the bill would make it that much more difficult to criticize the actions of the Israeli government.

Jewish groups such as the Jewish Voice for Peace and civil rights advocates in the ACLU have condemned the bill as an attack on free speech.

Israel Rains Down White Phosphorus On Rafah, Death Toll Surges

Several children have been killed in Israeli bombardment of the besieged city

Israel continued to bombard Gaza’s southernmost city of Rafah on 8 May, as over one million Palestinians there face an immediate threat after Israeli forces captured the city’s border crossing with Egypt the previous day.

“Overnight and into the early hours of the morning, the Israeli military continued to pound parts of eastern Rafah city,” Al Jazeera reported, adding that health facilities in Rafah are unable to accommodate large numbers of casualties.

Israel also targeted Rafah with white phosphorus munitions, which are illegal to use on civilians and civilian infrastructure and are considered a war crime under international law.

Russia Blocks Rumble

The Russian government has officially blocked access to the video-sharing platform Rumble, following the company’s refusal to comply with demands for censorship. That’s according to Chris Pavlovski, CEO of Rumble, who confirmed the news, highlighting the platform’s commitment to free speech and its refusal to bend to external pressures.

“Russia has officially blocked Rumble because we refused to comply with their censorship demands,” Pavlovski stated. He pointed out the apparent contradiction in the treatment of different tech companies, noting, “Ironically, YouTube is still operating in Russia, and everyone needs to ask what Russian demands Google and YouTube are complying with?”

The block comes amid heightened tensions over internet freedoms in Russia. The government has been tightening its grip on online content, demanding that platforms remove or block content it deems politically sensitive or harmful.

This action against Rumble raises questions about the operations of other tech giants in the country, notably YouTube. The Google-owned video service continues to operate, suggesting it may be meeting Russian regulatory demands that Rumble has rejected.
