The Pineal Gland
The main function of the pineal gland is to receive information about the state of the light-dark cycle from the environment and convey this information through the production and secretion of melatonin.

Melatonin production is not exclusive to the pineal gland, however. There is evidence that melatonin can be synthesised in other sites of the body, including (but not exclusive to) the skin, gastrointestinal tract, retina, bone marrow, placenta, and immune system.
Our sleep-wake cycle;
melatonin secretion reaches a maximum peak between 2:00 and 4:00 a.m. and then gradually decreases with exposure to early morning bright light.
In one study, two hours of continuous use of a tablet or smartphone in the evening reduced melatonin production by 22% in 20-year-old subjects, resulting in poorer sleep length and quality.
