The most compelling complaint about cosmetic battlepasses is that they induce FOMO (fear of missing out) in the player. If the gameplay, graphics, connection quality is good, then it is a good game. Cosmetics are a frivolity that only stroke the ego of the consumer. I have noticed that people who complain about battlepasses being included in their games typically dont like the game; but due to a sunk-cost-fallacy; they are held back from admitting the game is unfun.
