Do take your phone with you into protests, but also make sure it's encrypted (iPhones already are, Android devices you need to check settings) - remove fingerprint unlock capability & have good password hygiene
I'm not going to recommend not taking your amazing organizing and recording devices with you into riots and protests. You need them. They are your eyes and ears and mouths of the revolution.
Just make sure you are covered if you are arrested. Don't worry about them using the metadata to arrest you. No charge would stick.
