Ahead of a meeting between Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles and his British counterpart, John Healy, in London on Monday, the Returned & Services League of Australia is urging the two governments to work with Russian authorities to have his remains returned.
Pearse’s original grave, where he died near the town of Obozersky, was later lost and his body moved. What was thought to be his remains were found in 2018 in a scrapyard after an exhaustive search involving a Russian military archaeologist and an Australian military historian.
“It really is a national disgrace,” says Wright, author of Australia’s Lost Heroes: Anzacs in the Russian Civil War 1919.
“It’s a completely untenable position. You can’t say he’s an Australian VC – his VC is on display in the war memorial in Canberra – and then say he’s not our responsibility.”
A UK government spokesperson said despite numerous requests, Russian authorities had not yet given permission to allow British officials to undertake formal identification.
“We continued to urge the Russian authorities to allow us to carry out DNA testing and formal identification so that they can have the respectful burial they deserve,” they said.
But Wright says the Russian embassy in Canberra has told him Moscow is happy to help. Russia’s Ministry of Defence did not reply to inquiries.

The latest audit by the US Department of Defense revealed an incorrect inventory of these weapons after their transfer to Kiev, RIA Novosti found out after analyzing Pentagon reports.
"Because many of the defense items shipped to Ukraine in 2022 never appeared in the quarterly inventory report, we assessed that many of these items were likely lost or destroyed in Ukraine or that the Ukrainian Armed Forces expended them in 2022 or 2023, when maintaining records of expended EEUM items by serial number was not a formal process," the audit report said.
The audit found that the number of Javelin missiles delivered to Ukraine dropped sharply after March 31, 2023, and omitted specific numbers as classified information. However, in its annual budget reports, the Pentagon lists how many Javelins it plans to buy. Those records match the audit report.
Figures from Pentagon budget reports showed that the number of Javelin missiles delivered by the US to Ukraine after 2022 has been cut by more than 70%.
The decline is likely due to the inability to quickly produce Javelin missiles in quantities that would satisfy both the needs of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and replenish the stockpiles of the American Armed Forces and fulfill contractual obligations to third countries. A report published by the US Congressional Research Service in September highlighted the vulnerability of the missiles' production.
"Some analysts have found that the Javelin missile's production life is among the longest in the U.S. military's precision-guided munitions portfolio," the congressional document says.
