ChatGPT billing design: one account, two subscriptions, and canceling only stops half of it

I ran into what feels like a deliberately confusing billing setup.

I canceled my ChatGPT subscription through Google Play Store, assuming that would stop all charges tied to my account. I genuinely believed I had fully canceled my subscription.

Months later, I discovered I was still being billed through a separate web subscription tied to the same login via ChatGPT.

Google Play billing and web billing are completely separate systems, but they’re not clearly explained as separate to the average user. From the outside, it looks like one account = one subscription, but that’s not how it actually works.

So I ended up with ongoing charges I didn’t realize were still active, even after I had already “canceled.”

Support acknowledged the confusion and issued a partial refund, but most of the charges were not refunded because they fall outside their standard refund window.

This feels like a classic case of confusing UX design where the system technically follows rules, but the design itself makes it very easy for users to unintentionally keep paying.

If you use ChatGPT on Android, double-check BOTH:

Google Play subscriptions

Web billing / account settings

Because canceling one does not cancel the other, even though it feels like it should.
