سیستم جدید دید در مه

هدایت خودرو در شرایط گوناگون آب و هوایی با چالش‌های ویژه‌ی خود روبرو است.

در شرایطی که دید کم است، مانند غبار و یا مه، این چالش‌ها می‌توانند بیشتر و حتی خطرناک نیز باشند. پژوهشگران MIT سیستم تصویربرداری نوینی ساخته‌اند که در شرایط مه غلیظی که چشم انسان کارایی ندارد نیز فاصله اشیا را اندازه گیری می‌کند. ناتوانی در هدایت خودرو در شرایط غبار (مه) آلود، یکی از سدهای اصلی بر سر راه "سیستم‌های ناوبری خودران قابل اعتماد" است. بنابراین این سیستم MIT می‌تواند گام مهمی به سوی خودروهای خودران باشد.

نکته مهم این است که کارکرد این سیستم بسیار بهتر از بینایی انسان است، و در حالی که کارکرد سیستم‌های پیشین از بینایی انسان کمتر بوده است.با طراحی ویژه‌ی این سیستم، مشکل "بازتابش نور از قطره‌های آب موجود در مه" که بیشتر سیستم‌های تصویربرداری پیشین را با مشکل روبرو می‌کند نیز حل شده است.
در حقیقت، سیستم حتی ممکن است در فاصله‌های طولانی بهتر نیز کار کند، زیرا تفاوت زمانی بین زمان ورود ذرات نور بیشتر خواهد بود، که این می‌تواند برای ساخت تصویر دقیقتر بهتر نیز باشد.
