Topic: Variable autonomy and explainable planning in human-robot interaction
Summary: Full automation in robotics is currently not possible in many application domains (e.g. healthcare and assisted mobility, extreme environments) due to the complexity and variety of tasks, and the unpredictable nature of the world and the human behaviours sharing the space. As a result, robots still require human help in human environments (e.g. think of your robot vacuum cleaner, which continuously needs your help while trying to complete the relatively easy cleaning task). In doing so, the robot needs to be employed with good mechanisms to switch in between autonomy levels, which are ideally defined on a continuous scale, as well as finding good ways to communicate its plans to nearby humans.
The aim of this PhD project is to 1) learn how to perform efficiently with/around humans through task and motion planning, 2) equip robots with multimodal communication tools to convey states and decisions, so that their operation is explainable, and 2) develop fluent arbitration mechanisms for adopting appropriate levels of autonomy through perception and decision making. Complex real-life application scenarios will be studied in this project, such as interacting with health personnel or patients in a hospital ward, or inspection in complex workplace environments.

Topic: The use of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics in Live Creative Installations
Summary: With robotics technologies becoming more affordable and accessible, there is a growing interest from creative industries to involve robotics in live installations. The Thingamabobas is an example of such an installation we developed in collaboration with the Makers of Imaginary Worlds (MOIW). However, there are many challenges, as well as opportunities, when working with robotic installation art. Especially, there is a strong need for research to enable technological capabilities to improve the entire audience experience through an artistic lens. This PhD project aims to build socially intelligent robotic installations by 1) developing artificial intelligence methods to create robotic installations, which are easy to configure by artists, 2) implementing adaptive robot behaviours that respond to changing audience states, such as engagement, boredom, attention, in order to enhance interaction through cognitive and user modelling, and 3) evaluating the developed techniques in real-world installations with real audiences.

A first-class or upper second-class BSc or MSc degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Engineering or a related subject (essential). Individuals with significant relevant non-academic experience are encouraged to apply.

The Emotion, Neuroscience, and Development Lab (PI: Dr. Pan Liu) in the Department of Psychology at North Dakota State University (NDSU) is looking to recruit a PhD student for Fall 2022. Our Lab takes an interdisciplinary, multi-method approach to understanding the neurocognitive mechanisms associated with socio-emotional processing and development in children and adolescents. A current emphasis in the lab is to study how cognitive vulnerabilities, via interaction with other individual and environmental factors, predict the development of internalizing psychopathology (anxiety and depression) in youth. We use behavioral, EEG/ERP, and eye-tracking measures to tackle these questions.



The Psychology PhD program at NDSU offers a full tuition waiver and a stipend through teaching assistantship. The student will have full access to the resources at the Center for Visual and Cognitive Neuroscience at NDSU, including a variety of equipment (EEG, eye-tracking, fNIRS, TMS), data storage/analysis infrastructure, dedicated technical support and technical training (programming, data analysis, etc.). They will also have plenty of opportunities to interact and collaborate with other areas in Psychology (Visual/Cognitive Neuroscience, Social/Health Psychology) as well as other departments at NDSU (e.g., Human Development and Family Science).



The application deadline is January15, 2022. GRE is not required for this round of application. The application fee at NDSU is as low as $35 (exempted for McNair Scholars). The Lane Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering of the Benjamin M. We are searching for candidates with a strong background in computer vision, deep learning, applied mathematics, and biomedical image analysis, especially ultrasound images. The center is focused on developing new algorithms and techniques that use advances in AI and machine learning to analyze different types of biomedical data. Emphasis is on cardiovascular health (especially on the analysis of cardiac images, such as echocardiographs, MRI, CT images, etc), health disinformation, and privacy preserving health data analytics.



The Postdoctoral Fellows will conduct research on one or more of the topics above. Together with the project team members, the Postdoctoral Fellows will have the opportunity to determine the specific direction of their research project within the scope of the collaborative projects in the center, depending on their interests.



Qualifications



The successful candidate must have a PhD in computer science, electrical engineering, computer engineering, biomedical engineering, applied mathematics, physics or a related field. Familiarity with machine learning/deep learning/data analytics is a requirement and proficiency in scientific computing using one or more of the major programming languages/environments (python, PyTorch, Matlab, C/C++, or R) is essential.

Position Description

Three postdoctoral positions are immediately available at the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Team/Lab, Henan University; the postdoc fellows will be co-supervised by Prof. Ioannis Pitas from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece.

The postdoc fellows can stay 4-5 months with Prof. Ioannis Pitas at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece; but they should stay in China for at least 7-8 months per year.

Deep Learning, Domain Adaptation, Multi-Modal Representations

The position will be funded for two years (initially for one year, renewable for an additional year). The candidate will join the SDC research team under the supervision of Dr Thomas Lampert, the Chair of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, and join his international team of PhD students and engineer to develop novel deep learning approaches to domain invariant representation learning (particularly in multi-modal data), with application (but not restricted) to Medical Imaging and Remote Sensing. The funding is not connected to a particular project, so it is the perfect opportunity for a strong candidate to explore new directions under the supervision of the Chair.


The successful candidate will have (or will soon obtain) a PhD in computer science or related domain and have experience in deep learning and applied machine learning and a strong level of written and spoken English. Experience with transformers, GANs, autoencoders, and/or unsupervised/self-supervised DL (autoencoders, etc) would be a plus. You will join a growing team and will have the freedom to follow your interests in a direction complementary to the abovementioned research focusses. You will be expected to target leading outlets in the field of machine learning and a strong track record in CVPR/ICCV/ECCV, NIPS/ICML/ICLR, or PAMI/IJCV/TIP. Funding

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Social and Cognitive Computing (SCC) department of the Institute of High-Performance Computing (IHPC) is seeking an exceptional research scientist to expand our dynamic and multidisciplinary team. Our current team members have degrees in computer science, information systems, psychology, cognitive science and neuroscience from Berkeley, CMU, EFPL, KU Leuven, NTU, NUS, MIT, Stanford, SUTD, UIUC, etc. We work on some of the most crucial, incredibly hard, and future-oriented problems in AI, that lie at the cross-disciplinary convergence of cognitive science, psychology, behavioural sciences, artificial intelligence, computational modelling & simulation.

For this position, the successful candidate will be expected to:

· Develop image/video processing algorithms for detection and tracking of artefacts relevant to privacy and memorability in images - Eg. human face, objects, handwriting etc.

· Develop and evaluate several obfuscation strategies such as blurring, masking etc. and evaluate their effectiveness.

· Develop and evaluate methods for estimation of memorability of images using multimodal data (image, gaze, brain-image etc.). Design and conduct user-studies to gather data from people using wearable cameras. Conduct surveys regarding users' privacy preferences, memorability of images and analyse factors underlying memorability and privacy sensitivity.

· Build attention based, incremental and autonomous machine learning models that use a data stream of images to estimate memorability and sensitivity of images.

· Develop privacy aware systems (Eg. serious games) that can be used for memory augmentation and training.

· Develop prototypes to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of algorithms in collaboration with research team members.

· Provide timely, accurate and detailed reports and presentations and demonstrations.



JOB REQUIREMENT

· PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related fields

· Research experience in at least in one of the following areas: computer vision, signal processing, brain imaging, gaze analysis, pattern recognition, object detection, image analysis and deep learning. Track record of publication in highly rated journals and conferences in AI, computational neuroscience.

· Knowledge/experience in computational methods and technology used for dealing with memory augmentation, neuro-psychiatric conditions, cognitive disorders.

· Proficiency in neural networks, image processing, statistics.

· Experience in image memorability, incremental learning, autoML will be an advantage.

· Excellent programming skills in languages such as Python, R , Java, C++.

· Good problem solving skills, team player, good interpersonal, presentation and communication skills

· Awareness of good scientific practices

The Applied Media Systems group of Ilmenau University of Technology in Ilmenau, Germany, is looking for candidates for a half-time Ph.D position (20 hours/week), in the area of machine learning for audio. The duties include teaching seminars and supervising students in Media Technology and Electrical Engineering.

Position Description

The L3i is a research lab of the University of La Rochelle. La Rochelle is a city in the south west of France on the Atlantic coast and is one of the most attractive and dynamic cities in France. The L3i works since several years on document analysis and has developed a well-known expertise in ‘Bande dessinée”, manga and comics analysis, indexing and understanding.
The work done by the post-doc will take part in the context of SAiL (Sequential Art Image Laboratory) a joint laboratory involving L3i and a private company. The objective is to create innovative tools to index and interact with digitised comics. The work will be done in a team of 10 researchers and engineers.

The work will consist in developing original approaches for extracting and recognizing graphics elements in comic panels in order to recognize emotions. Authors usually used different strategies for representing emotions such as shape of speech balloon, specific symbols, colour of the faces, etc. These elements are drawn among the other graphic elements (main characters, scenery, …) making the localisation and the extraction challenging. In order to extract these specific elements, the development of original approaches will be necessary. Deep learning-based strategies can be explored to reach this goal. This work will be done in collaboration with other researchers working on text understanding.

Qualifications

Candidates must have a completed PhD and a research experience in image processing and analysis, pattern recognition. Some knowledge and experience in deep learning are also recommended.
