4 PhD Student Positions in Cancer Research Focusing on Tumour Escape Mechanisms

The research-intensive program tackles next-generation cancer biology covering molecular mechanisms of tumour progression, treatment resistance and biomarker discovery. It focuses on tumour escape mechanisms, thus addressing the increasingly important clinical problem of tumour recurrence and drug resistance. The program includes transferable skill training, support in career development, scientific lectures by international speakers and annual PhD retreats.

Job description:
The laboratory of Artificial Vision and Real-Time Systems (AViReS) is offering a one-year Post-Doc position -renewable for 1+ additional year(s)- to design, develop and evaluate visual based object-recognition solutions of objects lying on the sea surface.

Requirements:
We are looking for a highly-motivated, independent and skilled researcher with a PhD degree and related experience in machine vision, artificial intelligence and/or computer science/engineering.
A background and track record of peer-reviewed conference/journal publications in machine vision/machine learning is compulsory (object recognition, deep learning, etc.).
Experience with designing, managing and executing experiments is a mandatory requirement. Relevant knowledge, and at least 1 year of experience in developing visual based solutions is mandatory.
As the Post-Doc will be working in an interdisciplinary team in international cooperation with universities, research organizations and companies, we expect a pro-active and collaborative attitude and excellent communication skills both in presentations and writing.

Postdoctoral researcher position in deep learning for medical image analysis at NYU

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to join our efforts in developing deep learning methods for early diagnosis of breast cancer during screening mammography. We intend to work both on methods improving the accuracy as well as explaining the prediction in a human-interpretable form.

The candidate will be based primarily at the NYU School of Medicine (Prof. Krzysztof J. Geras, Prof. Linda Moy and Prof. S. Gene Kim) and will work in close collaboration with the NYU Center for Data Science (Prof. Kyunghyun Cho).

Expected qualifications:
- PhD (or near completion) in machine learning or related discipline,
- experience with deep neural networks for computer vision,
- excellent programming skills,
- ability to work in an interdisciplinary team with members at various levels.

A PhD position is open in the Focal Area of Growth and Development in the research group of Prof. Markus Affolter. We offer an exciting international research environment at the Biozentrum in Basel to study the morphogenetic mechanisms of blood vessel formation in vivo. By using novel genetic approaches combined with high-resolution confocal live-imaging, we are investigating the mechanisms of junctional remodeling during sprouting angiogenesis in the zebrafish embryo. The PhD project will involve the generation of tissue specific and inducible knock-out models in zebrafish and state-of-the-art in vivo imaging approaches to dissect protein dynamics during endothelial cell movements and cell-cell interactions.

Your profile
We are looking for highly motivated candidates with a Master degree and with a solid background in genetics, molecular biology and cell biology. Experience with zebrafish is desired but not mandatory. Teamwork within the international group requires spoken and written English language skills.

Full-time Research Specialist position at Penn – social / decision neuroscience

The Jenkins Lab at the University of Pennsylvania seeks a full-time Research Specialist to begin late Summer or Fall 2018 (start date flexible).

Competitive applicants will have superb technical abilities and an interest in applying those abilities to questions about the mind and brain in an interdisciplinary, collaborative research environment. Located in the Department of Psychology and directed by Adrianna (Anna) Jenkins, the lab studies the cognitive and neural bases of social and economic behavior using a range of approaches including functional brain imaging, computational modeling, natural language processing, and laboratory and online experiments.

Responsibilities: The Research Specialist will work closely with the Principal Investigator and other lab personnel to contribute technical expertise to all aspects of the lab’s research, including (i) designing and programming behavioral and fMRI experiments, (ii) using computational modeling and other approaches to analyze behavioral, fMRI, and “big” data, and (iii) developing laboratory pipelines for data analysis and storage, including advancing the lab’s efforts toward open, reproducible science. The Research Specialist also will have ongoing opportunities to engage with the Psychology Department and the broader intellectual community at the University of Pennsylvania.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree or higher in cognitive science, computer science, economics, linguistics, mathematics, neuroscience, psychology, statistics, or a related field. Competence in at least one programming environment is essential; proficiency in MATLAB, Python, and/or R is especially desirable. Previous research experience is highly desirable. Experience with fMRI data analysis (e.g., SPM) and/or Natural Language Processing (e.g., word embeddings) is highly desirable but not required and can be learned on the job. Competitive applicants will be highly motivated, have excellent organizational and problem-solving skills, and show a high level of attention to detail. A two-year commitment is preferred.

The ideal candidate will contribute creatively to the lab’s research program, resulting in opportunities to present research at conferences and co-author manuscripts resulting from the research. This position is especially well suited to an individual interested in pursuing an academic or industry career in one of the fields mentioned above.
