For the second phase of the MCEC research programme, 38 PhD projects have been defined around the following themes:
Smart Biomass Conversion| What if we could replace crude oil with a more sustainable alternative to make the transportation fuels of the future? The chemical process currently used for the production of e.g. liquid fuels, can be tailored to enable the use of certified biomass as well as municipal waste. The PhD student will work on the synthesis of a new generation heterogeneous catalysts, capable of using a.o. lignin as a renewable feedstock to produce fuels, fuel additives or base chemicals, such as aromatics.
Storing Electricity from Renewable Sources in Chemical Bonds | Solar and wind energy are incessant, but by nature intermittent resources. One way to store the temporary surplus of ‘green power’ lies in chemical bonds. Within this theme, the PhD student will work on the design, characterization and testing of new solid catalysts capable of turning carbon dioxide into fuels and base chemicals.
Catalyst Diagnostics to Develop More Active Catalysts | New green routes for fuels and chemicals require radically new catalyst materials. But with current technologies, testing and characterizing these materials is very time-consuming. PhD Characterization of pediatric brain tumors
Brain tumors are one of the leading causes of death in children. If possible, removing the tumor by surgery followed by radiotherapy and or chemotherapy is nowadays the treatment. However, often the tumor cannot be removed and only chemo and/or radiation therapy are considered as treatment. During the treatment patients are monitored with morphological imaging to evaluate response to therapy and its disease free survival. However, changes seen on imaging do not always reflect a change in tumor behavior or growth. From a diagnostic perspective, we are still lacking a tool that can non-invasively identify active tumor and indicate the aggressiveness of the tumor. Information from metabolic processes in the tumor and surrounding tissue may help to understand tumor physiology, which will improve diagnosis and treatment evaluation. In this research you will develop new metabolic imaging techniques at a unique 7T MR scanner dedicated for metabolic imaging (METAscan). You will focus on APT-CEST and 31P MRSI to study changes in metabolic parameters during treatment of children with the most common pediatric brain tumors, the low grade gliomas and the most difficult to treat pediatric brain tumors, the pontine tumors. You will be involved patient recruitment, scanning of the patient, and processing and analysis of the data.

A postdoctoral position to apply and develop new applications of two-photon excited fluorescence imaging in the living eye is available in the laboratory of Dr. Jennifer Hunter. Changes to important properties of excited retinal fluorophores (spectra, lifetime, etc.) in response to environmental alterations such as visual stimulation, pharmacological manipulation, or injury will be recorded in vivo at a single-cell level. Further, we will be developing capabilities to measure the redox ratio in the retina of living primates.
Candidates with a strong background in physiological optics, retinal physiology, microscope development and/or retinal imaging are encouraged to apply. Experience with optical alignment and MATLAB programming is highly desirable. Applicants should have a Ph.D. or equivalent training.
