Postdoctoral / Research Specialist position in Neural Circuits and Behavior @ Janelia (USA)

Postdoctoral / Research Specialist position in Neural Circuits and Behavior (https://www.janelia.org/lab/reiser-lab/positions)

The Reiser lab at the Janelia Research Campus seeks a creative scientist to join our endeavor to understand how the fly brain uses visual information to control behavior.

We use behavioral, anatomical, imaging, electrophysiological, and computational techniques to crack the neural circuits for vision and navigation in Drosophila. This is an exciting time to be working on the fly brain. It is the golden age of Drosophila neuroanatomy—full brain connectomes and precise genetic access to nearly every cell type in the brain are on the horizon. It is likely that within the next few years the behavioral methods used for establishing functional roles for identified cell types will become rate limiting. We have developed a number of new instruments and methods for high-content behavioral analysis and are recruiting a scientist to help with the development and application of these new tools.

In this position you would lead our efforts to apply these new tools to deeply map behavioral circuits. Many specific projects are possible that are related to active research topics in the lab (visual motion guided behaviors; visual place learning; central modulation of visual circuits).

Requirements:

A keen interest in figuring out the brain.
Ph.D. in neuroscience, experimental biology, or a quantitative field.
Familiarity with diverse computing environments.
Experience in animal behavior, neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, instrumentation, computer vision, machine learning, and/or computational neuroscience is a big plus.
Janelia is a unique, exciting research environment near Washington, D.C., with abundant opportunities for collaboration and learning new things. Interested applicants should apply by email; please include your curriculum vitae and research interests and arrange for three letters of reference to be sent to reiserm at janelia.hhmi.org.

The Reiser lab is committed to maintaining a diverse and inclusive environment. Members of groups underrepresented in science are especially encouraged to apply.

HHMI is an equal opportunity employer.

PhD and Postdoc positions, KU Leuven: Optimization frameworks for deep kernel machines

The research group KU Leuven ESAT-STADIUS is currently offering 2 PhD and 1 Postdoc (1 year, extendable) positions within the framework of the KU Leuven C1 project Optimization frameworks for deep kernel machines (promotors: Prof. Johan Suykens and Prof. Panos Patrinos).

Deep learning and kernel-based learning are among the very powerful methods in machine learning and data-driven modelling. From an optimization and model representation point of view, training of deep feedforward neural networks occurs in a primal form, while kernel-based learning is often characterized by dual representations, in connection to possibly infinite dimensional problems in the primal. In this project we aim at investigating new optimization frameworks for deep kernel machines, with feature maps and kernels taken at multiple levels, and with possibly different objectives for the levels. The research hypothesis is that such an extended framework, including both deep feedforward networks and deep kernel machines, can lead to new important insights and improved results. In order to achieve this, we will study optimization modelling aspects (e.g. variational principles, distributed learning formulations, consensus algorithms), accelerated learning schemes and adversarial learning methods.

The PhD and Postdoc positions in this KU Leuven C1 project (promotors: Prof. Johan Suykens and Prof. Panos Patrinos) relate to the following possible topics:

-1- Optimization modelling for deep kernel machines
-2- Efficient learning schemes for deep kernel machines
-3- Adversarial learning for deep kernel machines

The research group ESAT-STADIUS https://www.esat.kuleuven.be/stadius at the university KU Leuven Belgium provides an excellent research environment being active in the broad area of mathematical engineering, including data-driven modelling, neural networks and machine learning, nonlinear systems and complex networks, optimization, systems and control, signal processing, bioinformatics and biomedicine.

Auditory neuroscience: Postdoc and technician positions at UC San Francisco

Positions available for highly motivated scholars to study the neuroscience of hearing in the Hasenstaub laboratory at the University of California San Francisco. Applicants should be committed to studying the neural basis of auditory perception in the mouse by combining computational and biological tools, including in vivo electrophysiology, calcium imaging, optogenetic or other manipulations, and quantitative analysis and modeling. Three projects are available: 1) Optogenetic, behavioral, and computational studies of the circuitry mediating the influences of auditory, visual, and behavioral context in awake mouse auditory cortex. 2) Behavioral and circuit readouts of interneuron-mediated manipulation of auditory cortical plasticity in the mouse. 3) Functional and transcriptional changes associated with hearing loss or presbycusis.

Prior experience in at least one of the following: mouse or rat auditory behavioral experiments, in vivo or in vitro electrophysiology, widefield calcium imaging, optogenetics, analysis of large datasets, and/or establishing collaborations with other human/animal neuroscience laboratories is desirable.

Review will begin immediately and continue until positions are filled. Both postdoc and technician candidates should send a statement of research interests and career goals, a CV including publications, and three references to Dr. Hasenstaub ([email protected]).
