Brushing off the seriousness of financial control as “a husband saying no to a fashion shopping spree” is not only dismissive—it is dangerous. It can involve restricting access to money, monitoring every purchase, preventing someone from working, or forcing them into financial dependence so they cannot leave.
Minimising this behaviour reinforces harmful narratives that abuse must be physical to be real. In reality, coercive control—often including financial abuse—is one of the strongest predictors of escalating violence. It traps people in cycles where leaving becomes logistically and emotionally overwhelming.
When society normalises or jokes about these dynamics, it silences victims, validates perpetrators, and delays intervention. We should be calling it what it is: a serious form of domestic violence that requires awareness, accountability, and zero tolerance.”

My wife & I paid off our first mortgage which was $313.5 k from in 4.5 years from 2009 to 2013.
I became super obsessed with knocking it off. That achievement in our late 20s set us up for life.
This is why I am now 44 years old with a decent house no debt with 3 kids.
Did I blow up at my wife a few times because we didn’t put every single spare cent on the mortgage - the answer is yes.
But it has served us very well over the past 15 years.
Does that make me a financial abuser?
By modern definitions, I am guilty as charged!
My wife & I paid off our first mortgage which was $313.5 k from in 4.5 years from 2009 to 2013.
I became super obsessed with knocking it off. That achievement in our late 20s set us up for life.
This is why I am now 44 years old with a decent house no debt with 3 kids.

I am at Westpac on Collins Street, Melbourne … a mentally ill woman (probably drugged up) started shouting the most bizarre obscenities in the bank!
I joked with the security guard, “are you going to protect me from that woman?”
He got visibly upset, he said that if he touches ANYONE he will lose his job & his security license!
I said “What is the point of having a security guard in the bank?”
He looked me straight in the eye & said “this country is finished”!
What an UNBELIEVABLE experience in Melbourne!
